Server 2008 | The IP address already assigned to another adapter

I’d just done a transfer of one VMware image to another server but the NIC drivers didn’t seem to transfer over correctly. Wasn’t an issue, just added a new virtual adapter but when I tried to add the previously used IP address I got the following message:

Microsoft TCP/IP
The IP address 10.77.77.7 you have entered for this network adapter is already assigned to another 'NIC1'. 'NIC1' is hidden from the network and Dial-up Connections folder because it is not physically in the computer or is a legacy adapter that is not working. If the same address is assigned to both adapters and they become active, only one of them will use this address. This may result in incorrect system configuration. Do you want to enter a different IP address for this adapter in the list of IP addresses in the advanced dialog box?

Just to note, this is not specifically a VMware error either. I have come across this before in a genuine installation.

I tried this process from Windows XP but it wouldn’t read the USB drive as an active partition. So I have to recommend using any OS version above XP ie Vista, 7 or 2008.

Active Directory: Import Multiple User Accounts

I have to admit, it would be nicer if Microsoft Server 2008 developers implemented an import feature because then setting up a new site could be so much quicker. Without such features though leads us to doing this the hard way but as always its actually quite easy once you know how ;)

So let’s get on with it, I have multiple users and multiple Organisational Units that I want to import my Active Directory (d0tk0m.com).

Locally Hacking Windows XP SP3 Pro to Enable Administrator Account

Ok, so I made a mistake today. I took a machine off the domain and forgot to enable the local admin account before I rebooted. A text book error but hey, my real problem was trying to avoid a reinstall as I really didn’t have time to do that. To be honest I was really surprised that this hack still worked as it was something I used to do at college to gain admin rights on workstation :)

WSS 3.0 Standard Backup Procedure

Before you begin, log onto the server that running SQL Server and check that ‘SQL Server VSS Writer‘ service is started and the startup type is set to ‘Automatic‘ as this is a requirement. Also, you will need to create a shared directory for the backup and set the required share permissions. In this example I’ve created BACKUPDIR on server BACKUPSVR.
